About Sabrina Mulverhill Cowling

Sabrina Mulverhill Cowling has been teaching in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) for 14 years. She is a dedicated and passionate educator who creates a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students.

Committed to Education and Student Success

Sabrina cares about her students’ success, tailoring her teaching style to their various learning needs. She believes in creating a classroom atmosphere that promotes curiosity, collaboration, and resilience, where kids feel comfortable exploring new ideas and challenging themselves. Her interest in education extends beyond textbooks; she emphasizes the value of social-emotional learning, critical thinking, and practical application of information.

Working on Her Certification in Special Education

Currently, Sabrina Mulverhill Cowling is working on her Special Education certification while pursuing a double master’s degree at National Louis University, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to professional growth and educational excellence. Sabrina’s desire to obtain her Special Education certification underscores her desire to help students with diverse learning abilities thrive. She recognizes that each child learns differently and is dedicated to developing tailored learning programs to help students gain confidence and independence in their studies.

Sabrina’s Career as an Educator

While working on her Special Education certification and master’s, Sabrina is also an English Language Arts (ELA) teacher for third- and fourth-grade students at Nash Elementary in Chicago, where she has worked for two years.

Before teaching at Nash Elementary, Sabrina taught fifth-grade math and science at Eugene Field for four years. At Eugene Field, she was a lead teacher for FUSE, an innovative program designed to engage students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning through choice-based challenges. Sabrina participated in professional development opportunities and was a lead PLL teacher for the school board.

Sabrina also taught at Beasley Academic Center for three years. As a third- and fourth-grade teacher, she improved NWEA percentiles in math and reading from 45% to 63%. She was a lead teacher for accelerated/gifted MATH and a lead ITL teacher for the school board. She guided and mentored fellow educators implemented innovative teaching strategies and fostered professional development initiatives.

Early in Her Career as a Teacher

Other roles as an educator include a kindergarten teaching position at Frazier Prep Academy, where Sabrina focused on IB-mindedness and strong values and nurtured independent learning skills. She was also a kindergarten teacher at Learn Charter Excel, where she developed appropriate LEARN lesson plans integrated with whole-brain teaching. According to math MAP data, her students experienced significant growth from Fall 2013 to Spring 2014, and 23% of students who started below grade level math in Fall 2013 were at grade level or above by Spring 2014.

In addition, Sabrina was a long-term first-grade substitute teacher at Mary Bethune School of Excellence, Chicago, a teacher assistant at Horace Mann Elementary, a substitute K-9 teacher at Evanston School District 65, and a first-grade student teacher at Falconer Elementary School. Sabrina was introduced to a broad range of subjects at Falconer Elementary. She developed students’ number and literacy skills, established and maintained a positive and inviting classroom setting conducive to ongoing teaching and learning, and differentiated instruction while implementing small group guided reading, learning centers, and other research-based literacy strategies that supported student learning.

Her Education

Sabrina attended Roosevelt University Chicago, where she got her BA in Professional Studies. She also attended Western Governors University, Salt Lake City, Utah, and received a post-BA in Elementary Education.

She is certified as an Illinois Teacher Type 3, which allows educators to teach children from birth through grade 3 in Illinois public schools; Google-certified; and completed LBS1 (Learning Behavior Specialist) training in August 2023, achieving the necessary credentials to work with students who have a wide range of disabilities, including learning disabilities, emotional disorders, autism, and other special needs.

Sabrina’s Personal Life

A lifelong lover of Chicago, Sabrina Mulverhill Cowling embraces the Windy City’s rich culture and endless opportunities for adventure. She enjoys Chicago summers, where she can spend time outdoors, attend music festivals, explore lakefront trails, and take advantage of all the season offers.

Sabrina is also a devoted animal lover, particularly dogs. She has a deep appreciation for animals and their companionship, finding comfort and happiness in their presence. Her love for animals extends to her belief in kindness and compassion, which she brings into both her personal and professional life.

Loves to Cook for Family and Friends

Food is another one of Sabrina’s greatest passions. She loves to cook and try new dishes. Food is a way for Sabrina to bring people together and create lasting memories.

Outside of her kitchen, Sabrina enjoys discovering hidden gems in Chicago’s diverse restaurant scene. She appreciates various cuisines and is always eager to try new foods from different cultures.

Recently, Sabrina started doing salsa dancing. Her hobbies also include photography and traveling. Lately, she’s been painting and learning Spanish.

Sabrina is always volunteering at school events. She also donates to ASPCA and St Jude.
